I came across the expression
“back like a bad penny” ( in reference to Robert Gates). I had not seen or heard the expression in some time. Did inflation render it obsolete? Probably not since I haven’t seen or heard the expression “back like a bad dollar”. In these troubled economic times every penny helps.

I recently used this expression when talking to someone from New York. It was terribly embarrassing -- he'd never heard of it, and I then was afraid it was some kind of Midwestern giveaway.. I'm happy to see it perhaps is a national expression, after all!?
