About Dog Cliches

My high primal thinker spouse constantly reminds me that she works like a dog. Not being familiar with any hard working dog ,I decided to investigate the origin of the expression work like a dog.

As luck would have it , I discovered that tomorrow, August 5th, is Work Like A Dog Day. Work Like a Dog Day honors and recognizes the hardest working among us. I guess that in recognition of the day I should get some treats for the high primal thinker.

My research did not lead to any information that would make dogs worthy of a cliche to say nothing of a special dog day. ( As a matter of fact there is more than one dog day - does the dog days of August ring a bell?).

All the dogs that I have known would hardly qualify as hard working dogs. Yes there are retrievers, herders and huskies but they look like they are having fun while working.

All in all, dogs seem to live the life of Riley. They don't worry about where their next meal is coming from. Health care is not a problem. Someone is always petting them. The hardest work they do is to take their master or mistress out for a walk. They are not monogamous. Any bitch or stud will do in a pinch.

Now that sex has entered the picture one slight problem emerges. What about the neutered or spayed dog? They come up a little short as far as the life of Riley is concerned. It's a dog's life after all!
