Go out in a blaze of glory
One cliché that should be banished from news stories concerning criminals is "go out in a blaze of glory". CNN reporters this morning used this cliché ad infinitum during their reporting of the search for the Boston Marathon bomber. They kept reminding their viewers that police were concerned that "suspect #2" might choose to go out in a blaze of glory when cornered. How can anyone who has committed a heinous crime be associated with glory. The cliché is intended to describe someone dying with great fanfare or excitement. I can understand a soldier going out with a blaze of glory defending his country. Criminals who choose to shoot it out with police go out in a blaze of shame.
